Building survey questions

Question types, required answers, follow-ups and routing rules for survey logic.

Open a survey and go to the Questions tab. Add questions one by one and choose the type that fits what you want to learn.

Question types

TypeVisitor seesSettings
BinaryTwo answers, Yes and No by default. You can rename both labels.
Multiple choiceA list of options.Add options and decide whether several can be chosen.
NumericA number scale, 0 to 10 by default.Set minimum and maximum, and labels for both ends.
Open textA free-text field.Set the placeholder.

Every question has a title and an optional description. Questions are required by default. Turn that off to let visitors skip.

Follow-up questions

A follow-up is an extra question that appears after the main one. It can be any of the four types. A common pattern is a numeric 0 to 10 question followed by an open-text “What is the main reason for your score?”.

Routing

By default people move to the next question in order. With answer routing you decide the next step based on the answer:

  • For choice and binary questions, route per answer.
  • For numeric questions, route by comparison: equals, does not equal, greater than, at least, less than, at most.
  • Send people to any other question, or end the survey right away.

Example: ask “How satisfied are you?” on a 0 to 10 scale. If the answer is at most 6, route to “What went wrong?”. Otherwise end the survey with the thank-you screen.

Tips for good surveys

  • Keep it to as few questions as you can. Completion drops with every extra step.
  • Ask one thing per question and avoid leading wording.
  • Use open text sparingly, one per survey is usually enough.
  • Test the routing in the preview: go through every path at least once.

Editing live surveys

Changing questions in a published survey changes what new visitors see. Existing answers keep their original question IDs, so for big changes it is cleaner to create a new survey.
